    Aerial photographer Jason Hawkes flew over Libya and photographed the ancient Roman cities of Leptis Magna and Sabratha from the air

    Carthaginians,The Egyptians,Greeks,Romans,Byzantines,Arabs,Turks and Italians have all passed through Libya and left their mark on it.i
    The ancient city of Leptis Magna's ruins have the ability to inspire awe.Leptis Magna had already been in existence for over 600 years when it hit the big time after one of its sons,Septimius Severus,became Roman emperor in the late second century AD. He spent a fortune rebuilding the city.i

    Libya is renowned for its ancient ruins,and those at Leptis Magna - one of five UNESCO World Heritage Sites found in the country - are the best known.The former Roman city lies around 80 miles east of the modern day capital,Tripoli,and dates back to around 1100 BC.i

    The city became prominent following the rise of Carthage as a major power in the Mediterranean.Lucius Septimius Severus, a native of Leptis Magna,became emperor of Rome in 193 BC,after which the city rivalled Carthage and Alexandria.It fell in the hands of the Vandals in 439 AD,and was eventually abandoned in the seventh century.i

    Colonel Gaddafi tried to cover up Libya's heritage from his people.As his regime focused Arab and African ambitions,it was forbidden to admit that Libya had once been the breadbasket of the Roman Empire.Septimus Severis,the Roman emperor,whose conquests took him to Britain where he died in York and was buried in Bath,was born in Leptis Magna.i

    Visitors often remark that its arches and gates,forums,market place,temples,baths, theatre,circus and amphitheatre amaze not only because they are some of finest surviving examples of Roman architecture in the Mediterranean but also because of their eerie completeness.It feels as if its inhabitants had left town that morning rather than nearly 1,500 years ago.It was reported that Gaddafi used the ruins of Leptis Magna to store rockets because he had calculated that its status as a Unesco World Heritage Site meant that Nato planes would not attack it.i

    Jason said Libya was the most difficult place he has ever shot in,even though everyone was very friendly: It was incredibly difficult getting a permit;I was there a month ago and the people who had promised to organised it never even turned up.I got caught up in Customs and they impounded my camera equipment.In the end we flew in a Mil Mi-8 (above).i
