I am planning to post a poem a day on this thread.i
I encourage comments and even the posting of poems you enjoy. This IS NOT a place to post what you have written.i
I am starting with a foreword to explain my thoughts on poetry and why I have so many poems at my fingertips.i
.......................................
Foreword
Poetry is a subjective thing.i
A poem has as many meanings as it has readers.i
We bring all that we are,and all that we believe, with us when we read.i
It is through the lens of our own experience that poetry is interpreted.i
I believe the question “What does this poem mean?” is the stroke of death when teaching or enjoying poetry.i
The question should be “How does this poem make you feel?”i
This is a much better starting place, and implies no right and wrong answers.i
I will give a brief explanation of why each poem affects me.i
You are, of course, encouraged to disagree with my choices.i
Poetry is subjective after all.x

The first poem I present to you is one of the first poems I had ever read.i
It is here because it harkens me back to my 12 year old self.i
I always read it aloud and it’s gentle rhythm never fails to soothe me.i
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “The Day Is Done” started me on my way to a life long love affair with poetry.i
................
The Day Is Done
...............
The day is done, and the darkness
Falls from the wings of Night,i
As a feather is wafted downward
From an eagle in his flight.i
I see the lights of the village
Gleam through the rain and the mist,i
And a feeling of sadness comes o'er me
That my soul cannot resist:i
A feeling of sadness and longing,i
That is not akin to pain,i
And resembles sorrow only
As the mist resembles the rain.i
Come,read to me some poem,i
Some simple and heartfelt lay,i
That shall soothe this restless feeling,i
And banish the thoughts of day.i
Not from the grand old masters,i
Not from the bards sublime,i
Whose distant footsteps echo
Through the corridors of Time,i
For,like strains of martial music,i
Their mighty thoughts suggest
Life's endless toil and endeavor;i
And tonight I long for rest.i
Read from some humbler poet,i
Whose songs gushed from his heart,i
As showers from the clouds of summer,i
Or tears from the eyelids start;i
Who,through long days of labor,i
And nights devoid of ease,i
Still heard in his soul the music
Of wonderful melodies,i
Such songs have a power to quiet
The restless pulse of care,i
And comes like the benediction
That follows after prayer.i
Then read from the treasured volume
The poem of thy choice,i
And lend to the rhyme of the poet
The beauty of thy voice.i
And the night shall be filled with music,i
And the cares, that infest the day,i
Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,i
And as silently steal away.x
